What is StudentConnect?

StudentConnect is a solutions-driven technology which opens a whole new world of communications between parents, teachers, schools and Boards of Educations with the safety, well-being and academic success of our students in mind.StudentConnect is a non-invasive, non-tracking Auto ID system designed simply to validate pre-configured events and to provide notifications to schools and parents whenever anomalies occur in a student’s standard schedule.StudentConnect is an integrated comprehensive student transportation and class attendance management system which uses the world’s first wireless communications between GPS  (Global Positioning Satellite) and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) to provide the most advanced school transportation and attendance information to parents and schools in real time.

Is this a tracking system or device?

StudentConnect is not a tracking device.  It is not a “big brother is watching” system.  It simply allows parents and school administrators the ability to receive notifications when anomalies occur so all stakeholders (parents and schools) can be more proactive in responding to safety and class attendance behavior of students during school hours.

How does StudentConnect work?

1. RFID Tag communicates wirelessly with RFID Reader
2. RFID reader detects child’s RFID Tag when in range and transmits data to Logiboxx GPS System
3. Parents recieve alerts through text messages straight to their phone
1. RFID Tag communicates wirelessly with RFID Reader in classroom
2. RFID reader installed at door monitors entry and exit of student in class and transmits data to GATIS software through wireless network
3. Parents and schools can logon and view student’s attendance record
 

What are the benefits of StudentConnect?

The primary benefit of StudentConnect is that it delivers critical data required to ensure safety of young and new student bus riders and data that can enhance the education system by providing analytics which provide decision making tools to school administrators and MOST IMPORTANTLY getting parents to become active participants in the education of their children. Some of the additional benefits are:

How much does it cost to participate?

StudentConnect is provided to parents, teachers, schools and school boards at a zero cost. It includes hardware installation, ID badges as well as continual customer service and support to participating schools.

How is the project funded?

StudentConnect is funded through advertisement dollars from corporations and small businesses that support the safety and education of students.

Who created the StudentConnect technology?

StudentConnect is created by EarthSearch Communications, an Atlanta-based technology firm, which holds the patent for the wireless communication between GPS and RFID technology used to power StudentConnect.

How can my school/school district participate in StudentConnect?

StudentConnect is open for all schools K-12 to participate.  School administrators should contact EarthSearch through our website to inquire about launching StudentConnect in their schools or school districts.  There is no cost for schools or Boards of Educations to participate in StudentConnect.

How can parents participate in StudentConnect?

All students at participating schools K-12 will automatically be enrolled into StudentConnect by their school administrators.  However, parents can create a personal login/password to access the StudentConnect online platform so they can register their child(ren) to be able to select/change mobile phone alerts; select school schedules for their child(ren); as well as communicate with their child’s teachers.  There is no cost for parents or students to participate in StudentConnect.  Participation is optional but it is a decision that is made at the school level since schools are responsible for the safety and academic development of the student during school hours.

How do I replace Auto ID badges if lost by my child? Is there a replacement fee?

Parents should report lost or damaged Auto ID badges to their school administrator for replacement badges.  StudentConnect Inc. shall initially supply RFID badges to all Student bus riders. Every student will have right to 1 (one) free replacement tag during school year. All subsequent replacements will be charged $5.00 fee per ID badge.

Is it mandatory for my child to participate in this program?

No, it is not mandatory for students to participate and parents may opt-out of StudentConnect through the online platform or by notifying their school administrator that they choose not to have their child participate.

Who determines which alerts I want to receive or can receive?

Initially all message alerts are set up as a standard part of the application and are enabled to be received on the parents mobile devices. However, parents can create a login/password to access the online StudentConnect platform to disable or enable which alerts they would like to receive to their cell phones.

Is there any cost to receive message alerts?

There is no cost through StudentConnect to receive messages via text or email regarding the status of your child. However, please check your plan with your mobile phone service provider to determine if you will be charged by your service provider for text messages.

Do you send student information with the messages?

No, we do not send any student information as part of the message; privacy is one of the key areas that StudentConnect takes seriously. We only send digital codes representing the student and the school name in the message transmitted to the parents. Student information is never provided in text, email messages or to any third-party.

Do you send parent information with the messages?

Parent information is never provided or shared in text or email messages to any third-party.

Are the messages encrypted or protected?

Data transmission travel on proprietary protocol and is encrypted. However, it is important to also know we do not transmit any personal information in the data transmitted.

Who has access to the data collected and how secure is data?

Only the school has access to the data collected. It is important to know that the data collected are simple anomalies and does not contain any regular activity information of students.

How do I receive message alerts?

Messages are received by text and email based on the mobile phone numbers and email addresses provided by parents.

Who do I contact if the school bus is late? Or, do you provide late arrival notices?

Yes, StudentConnect provides late arrival notices which parents will receive on their mobile devices.  In addition, we provide standard arrival notices that will alert all parents as to when the bus will arrive at their respective bus stops.

Who do I contact if I have a problem using the StudentConnect system?

EarthSearch provides a customer support service center to support the software and other user level type issues. Please contact your child’s school directly for questions directly related to your child.

Do you provide online tutorials?

Yes, an online tutorial to help you navigate the StudentConnect platform is provided.  To access the online tutorial, click on SUPPORT from the menu bar. In order to access the online tutorial utility, you must become a registered user by creating a login and password.

What if my student forgot their ID badge?

The school will provide a temporary badge to your child. The school may elect to charge a daily fee to parents for students arriving to school without their ID badges.

What is your relationship with Twitter?

We are using the Twitter communication platform to deliver messages sent to parents and schools.  EarthSearch is very pleased that Twitter has agreed to provide us access to its API (Application Programming Interface) which allows EarthSearch to provide global messaging capability at a zero cost to schools. Also, global messaging can support education systems and school districts across the country during critical times. The ability to deliver messages through our platform may be lifesaving in communicating Amber Alerts in the event of abductions or when sending messages regarding the safety of student bus riders.

Can I have student in more than one public school system?

Yes, parents may have multiple children attending more than one public school participating in StudentConnect.  Parents can register their children, select message alerts, schedule classes and communicate with each child’s teacher through StudentConnect’s online platform.

Do I get to view all of my children together under my account or must I log in to each individual school to view their status?

Yes, parents are able to view all of their children under the one account they create through the StudentConnect portal.  There is no need to log into each individual school to view their children.

Are school announcements posted to the system?

School announcements may be posted by school and transportation administrators on the StudentConnect online platform for parents and teachers to access and view through their StudentConnect accounts.

How does the email system between parents and teachers work?

The email system through StudentConnect is strictly private and used only between teachers and parents allowing them to maintain frequent and consistent communications to discuss issues regarding their child.  The email system alerts both parents and teachers when they have received a message through the StudentConnect platform.

Can I also receive messages on my cell phone?

Yes, parents and teachers may receive messages directly to their cell phones.

Are email exchanges secure?

Yes, the StudentConnect email system is secured with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) keys.  Secure Sockets Layer is a computing protocol that ensures the security of data sent via the Internet by using encryption.All email exchanges through StudentConnect are secure and transmitted through the EarthSearch server.  Only the sender and receiver of emails will be able to view and respond to emails.

Who has access to emails accounts?

Only parents and teachers have access to secure email accounts through the StudentConnect platform.

How long do you retain data collected?

Data collected through the StudentConnect platform is retained for 180 days.

Does law enforcement have access to your data?

Law enforcement officials do not have direct access to student or parent data.  Only at the request of parents or under a court order will EarthSearch provide location data to law enforcement officials upon request to be used for assistance in locating missing or abducted students.
